- Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked both made it into the Global Top 10 on Netflix, showcasing an unexpected comeback for the franchise.
- Along with the Chipmunks sequels, three other animated films also appeared in the Netflix charts, highlighting a dominance of animated content.
- It is possible that Netflix’s algorithm is linking these animated franchises, as viewers who watched one film were recommended others on the list, creating a trend in multiple countries.
Two of the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel movies squeak their way into the Netflix charts. Opening with 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, the franchise is based on the animated band of chipmunks that first appeared in the TV series The Alvin Show in the 1960s. The first movie was followed up by three sequel films: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. Alvin and the Chipmunks 5 has since been rumored, but its development has not been confirmed.
The Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise has an unexpected Netflix comeback as both Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked make it into the Global Top 10 for the week of October 23 through October 29. Chipwrecked made the chart for the second week in a row, this time coming in at No. 5 with 3.9 million views. The Squeakquel came in at No. 10 with 2.6 million views last week.
Animated Films Dominated The Netflix Charts Last Week
Alvin and the Chipmunks historically splits viewers, as many find the pint-sized singers to be grating and annoying. Still, both The Squeakquel and Chipwrecked were commercial successes. The former grossed $443 million at the global box office, and the latter took in $342 million. Both Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels were made with estimated $75 million budgets, making these profits impressive.
The Squeakquel and Chipwrecked were not the only animated films to make the Netflix charts this week. The Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels were joined by three other animated films: Monster High: The Movie at No. 6 with 3.8 million views, Minions at No. 8 with 3 million views, and Hotel Transylvania 2 at No. 9 with 2.8 million views. Not only are all five of these movies animated, but all of them are either sequels, or spinoffs of TV shows (Monster High: The Movie) or existing franchises (Minions).
While it is odd for so many animated sequels and spinoffs to make the Netflix Global Top 10, Alvin and the Chipmunks was not alone in this. Several of the countries that were watching the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels last week were also watching Monster High: The Movie, including Finland, South Africa, and Sweden. This trend could indicate that Netflix is algorithmically linking the animated franchises in some way, making it possible that viewers who watched one of the animated movies were then recommended another one on the list.
