Ballerina director Len Wiseman offers up a positive update about the John Wick spinoff film in the midst of its current production shutdown. Many Hollywood film and TV projects have halted production due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA’s strikes against studios that are part of the AMPTP. Post-production on Ballerina was paused in the wake of the strikes, though it’s unclear if the strikes themselves had to do with the decision.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wiseman gave a positive update on the production of Ballerina. The director said that, while production has been paused, a cut of the film already exists. Check out what Wiseman had to say below:
We’re on a pause right now, but I’ve just finished the director’s cut. Had an amazing shoot. It’s a really fun movie.
How Ballerina Will Expand The John Wick Universe
Ballerina sees Ana de Armas take on the role of Rooney, a ballerina who is part of the Ruska Roma and on a mission to avenge her murdered family. The film will take place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Keanu Reeves is also expected to reprise his role as John in a cameo appearance prior to the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Also reprising their roles from previous films are Ian McShane as Winston and a posthumous appearance by Lance Reddick as Charon. The cast of Ballerina is mostly new faces to the franchise, though, including Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). This means the movie will expand on the John Wick universe in new and interesting ways, exploring even more areas in its world of assassins.
Much like the movies in the main series, de Armas’ spinoff will no doubt be filled with memorable action sequences. This means plenty of unpredictable fight scenes are likely in store, which will allow the movie to stand as its own story within the universe. It will be clear how fun and thrilling Ballerina is once the film comes to theaters next year.
