Completed Script, Release Speculation & Everything We Know

  • The upcoming Polly Pocket movie, inspired by the popular toy from the 1980s, is eagerly anticipated due to the success of the recent Barbie movie.
  • Lily Collins has been confirmed as the lead actress and producer of the Polly Pocket movie, which is currently in the script development stage under the direction of Lena Dunham.
  • With the ongoing strike between the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild, the release date and further casting announcements for the Polly Pocket movie may be delayed until 2025.

Barbie isn’t the only toy-inspired movie on the way from Mattel’s catalog of products, and there is plenty of Polly Pocket movie news on the way. Though Polly Pocket was previously announced for development in 2021, the success of Barbie at the box office means Polly Pocket and the idea of a “young girl and a pocket-sized woman forming a friendship” is going to be one of the movie’s Mattel looks to next for the blockbuster movie treatment.

Polly Pocket was a toy introduced in the 1980s. Each Polly Pocket doll was tiny and came with her own pocket-sized dollhouse (or store, or hair salon, or castle). They were small enough for kids to carry them everywhere, but the toys got a revamp to be larger dolls decades later. Previously, an animated series inspired by the toy line aired on television, but the live-action Polly Pocket movie would be something completely new. Given that Barbie proved how easily toys without any specific backstory can be adapted into highly engaging big-screens stories, news about the Polly Pocket movie is now more in-demand than ever.

In the most recent Polly Pocket movie news, a script is completed for the project. Robbie Brenner, one of the producers of the Barbie movie, and the Executive Producer of Mattel films, is overseeing the development of projects surrounding a slew of different Mattel properties. She spoke to the press following the release of the Barbie movie about some of those projects, notably Polly Pocket.

Polly Pocket is a key project on Mattel Films’ horizon. Robbie Brenner called her work on the Polly Pocket movie an “amazing collaboration” with project star Lily Collins and writer/director Lena Dunham. Brenner also said she was hoping the movie would be made “at some point in the future.” Her full statement on the Polly Pocket movie is below:

“First of all, they are two of my favorite ladies ever. It’s been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She’s incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It’s just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we’ll be making that at some point in the future.”

Polly Pocket Movie Is Confirmed

The Polly Pocket movie was confirmed by Mattel in 2021. A movie about the tiny toys that were popular in the 1980s and ‘90s was announced along with leading lady Lily Collins. So far, however, there is no news about a Polly Pocket movie release date. It’s likely that the movie is still a ways off since the script will likely go through edits before the full cast is assembled. With both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild on strike for the first time in over 60 years, progress on the film won’t be made until terms of the strikes are worked out between the unions and the studios. That likely puts the Polly Pocket movie release date somewhere in 2025.

Polly Pocket Movie Cast

The only Polly Pocket movie cast member confirmed so far is Lilly Collins. Collins will play the titular Polly Pocket as well as being a producer on the movie. After the announcement of her casting, Collins released a statement saying, “As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen.

More casting announcements will likely be made following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The actors’ union is currently striking due to negotiations with studio heads breaking down concerning the use of actors’ likenesses by studios as well as residual payments for streaming content. Until a fair deal is reached in which working actors are compensated for their contributions to projects, no new casting decisions will be made on movies for big studios in Hollywood.

Polly Pocket Movie Story

Lena Dunham is pulling double duty on the Polly Pocket movie story. Not only will she direct the movie, but she’s also writing the script. In October 2022, she had already finished her second draft of the script (via The Hollywood Reporter), and remarked that it involved “what happens when a small person encounters a big world.” and that Polly Pocket would still be “teensy tiny ‘90s size.” Other than that remark at a press event, however, there hasn’t been much news about what the Polly Pocket movie story will entail.

There is some speculation that the Polly Pocket movie could be similar to the Barbie movie as a toy moves from her fictional world to the real world because the original description of the movie when it was announced stated it focused on a “young girl and a pocket-sized woman forming a friendship.” That’s not very different from Barbie leaving her home and making friends with a woman working for Mattel. It is, however, confirmed to be a family comedy.

When Dunham was first announced as both the writer and director for the movie, she shared her own history with Polly Pocket toys in a statement, saying:

“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me – Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director. I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart, playful films that speak to them without condescension.”

These comments bode incredibly well for the movie, especially given that it mirrors the early creative approaches to the Barbie movie. Between Robbie Brenner, Lena Dunham, and Lily Collins, it sounds like the Polly Pocket movie is in good hands.
