August 2023 will bring a variety of movies to theaters, such as a new adventure from four mutant turtle brothers, the return of a megalodon shark, a horror movie based on a chapter of a famous novel, a movie based on a video game, a new story from the DC Extended Universe, and more. July 2023 saw the release of some of the most anticipated movies of 2023, of which two in particular were massive hits: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. July also saw the arrival of Insidious: The Red Door, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, The Beanie Bubble, and Disney’s Haunted Mansion.

Given that July saw a lot of big theatrical releases, none of them are available to stream yet except for one: The Beanie Bubble, which was made available to stream on Apple TV+ a week after its theatrical release. Luckily, August is bringing a variety of exciting movies to theaters, such as a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adventure, the sequel to The Meg, a horror movie based on a chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the big-screen adaptation of Gran Turismo, the adventures of a one-of-a-kind superhero from the DCEU, and more. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is an animated superhero movie directed by Jeff Rowe, the seventh theatrical movie in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and a reboot of the series. After spending years sheltered from the human world, four turtle brothers – Donatello (voiced by Micah Abbey), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), and Raphael (Brady Noon) – set out on a quest to be accepted as normal teenagers in New York City through acts of heroism. With the help of April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), the brothers go on a hunt for a mysterious crime syndicate, but they will have to fight an army of mutants. Also part of the voice cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem are Hannibal Buress, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Seth Rogen, and Paul Rudd.

Meg 2: The Trench is a sci-fi action horror movie directed by Ben Wheatley, based on the 1999 novel The Trench by Steve Alten, and a sequel to The Meg. Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and Jiuming (Wu Jing) lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the depths of the ocean. However, their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission, forcing them into a high-stakes battle for survival. The crew will go against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, and they will have to outrun, outsmart, and outswim their adversaries to save themselves. Also starring in Meg 2: The Trench are Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis.

Shortcomings is a comedy-drama movie directed by Randall Park and based on the graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine. It’s the story of struggling filmmaker Ben (Justin H. Min) and his girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), who works for a local Asian American film festival. When Miko moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left to his own devices, giving him a chance to explore what he thinks he actually wants. Also starring in Shortcomings are Sherry Cola, Debby Ryan, Tavi Gevinson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jacob Batalon, and Timothy Simons.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the crew of the Demeter on their voyage from Transylvania to London, where they are stalked every night by a merciless presence onboard: the legendary Dracula, who needs to feed. Starring in The Last Voyage of the Demeter are Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, and Javier Botet.

Gran Turismo is a biographical sports movie directed by Neil Blomkamp, based on the PlayStation Studios video game series of the same name and inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenage Gran Turismo player who aspired to be a race car driver. Gran Turismo, then, follows Jann (Archie Madekwe), whose gaming skills win him a series of Nissan-sponsored video game competitions to become an actual professional race car driver. Also starring in Gran Turismo are David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Geri Halliwell, and Darren Barnet.

The Pod Generation is a sci-fi rom-com directed by Sophie Barthes. Set in a not-so-distant future, in New York, tech giant Pegasus offers couples the chance to share their pregnancies via detachable artificial wombs or pods. Rachel (Emilia Clarke) and Alvy (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are ready to start a family, and Rachel lands a spot at the Womb Center. Alvy, a botanist and purist about the natural environment, has his doubts about the pod but takes a leap of faith for Rachel, and so their journey into high-tech parenthood begins. Also starring in The Pod Generation are Rosalie Craig, Vignette Robinson, and Kathryn Hunter.

Blue Beetle – August 18

Blue Beetle is a superhero movie directed by Angel Manuel Soto and part of the DC Extended Universe. Blue Beetle follows Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), who after graduating from college and going back to his hometown Palmera City, is chosen to become a symbiotic host to the Scarab, an ancient alien biotechnological relic. This grants Jaime an exoskeleton armor capable of incredible but unpredictable powers, turning him into the superhero known as Blue Beetle. Also starring in Blue Beetle are Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez.

Strays is a comedy movie directed by Josh Greenbaum. It’s the story of Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell), a gullible Border Terrier who is abandoned on the streets by Doug (Will Forte), his selfish owner who is also an animal-hating drug addict who never wanted Reggie. This leads Reggie to team up with other strays, such as a street-wise Boston Terrier named Bug (Jamie Foxx), an Australian Shepherd named Maggie (Isla Fisher), and a therapy Great Dane named Hunter (Randall Park) in order to get revenge on Doug. Also part of the cast of Strays are Josh Gad, Sofia Vergara, Dennis Quaid, Harvey Guillén, Brett Gelman, and Rob Riggle.

Back on the Strip is a comedy movie directed by Chris Spencer in his feature directorial debut. Back on the Strip follows Merlin (Spence Moore II), who after losing the woman of his dreams, moves to Las Vegas in hopes of becoming a famous magician. However, he ends up being hired as the frontman in a revival of the Black male stripper group The Chocolate Chips. Led by Luther (Wesley Snipes), the old and out-of-shape Chips put aside their old issues and get back together to save the hotel where they used to perform, while also helping Merlin get his girl back. Also starring in Back on the Strip are Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Hart, JB Smoove, and Faizon Love.
