MCU Fans Defend Scarlet Witch After A Thanos Hot Take Goes Too Far

  • MCU fans defend Scarlet Witch against claims that she has committed worse crimes than Thanos, citing the tragedies she has suffered and her motivations seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
  • Fans empathize with Scarlet Witch, pointing out her corruption by the Darkhold and the temptation anyone would have to use it for personal gain.
  • The lack of support for Scarlet Witch from the Avengers is highlighted as a factor that contributed to her actions, suggesting that a strong community could have helped her handle her grief better.

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans unite to defend Scarlet Witch from a harsh take. As the most popular franchise in the whole world, MCU fans are quite invested in what’s happening in the franchise. This means that there’s a wide variety of opinions, resulting in contradicting takes. In a rare occurrence, however, the majority of the MCU fans are in unison when it comes to a controversial take about Wanda Maximoff.

A Reddit post arguing that Wanda has committed worse crimes than Thanos has gone viral, with the majority of fans defending Scarlet Witch. Check out some of the posts below:

One MCU fan points out all the tragedies that Wanda has suffered in the MCU, and how they explain her Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actions.

Another fan reminds everyone that Scarlet Witch was also corrupted by the Darkhold.

A Wanda-defender simply writes: “tell me you’ve never known grief without telling me you’ve never known grief.”

One fan appeals to people’s ability to empathize and points out how everyone would be tempted to delve into the Darkhold if they knew that it could give them everything they ever wanted.

Finally, another MCU fan argues that Wanda actions are understandable, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should have done a better job of establishing her motivations.

Why Scarlet Witch Criticism Is Wrong

Wanda gives look of surprise in Multiverse of Madness; Wanda cries in vacant lot in WandaVision

Wanda remains one of the unique characters in the franchise, as there’s often a debate regarding where she fits in MCU’s pantheon of heroes. Despite being introduced as early as Phase 2, it’s only in the Multiverse Saga that Marvel Studios is finally delving into her character, with Phase 4 kickstarting with WandaVision, which tackled her long-standing grief. However, she leaned more into her villainy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she went on a killing rampage in an effort to reunite with her sons, Tommy and Billy.

It’s also worth noting that Thanos’ Avengers: Infinity War snap may not have been motivated by resources. Otherwise, it would have been easier to double the universe’s natural assets, this way, he didn’t have to play god and snuff half of the population. Granted that Wanda’s motivations in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were selfish, it’s difficult to blame her, considering all the losses that she has suffered in her life. As many of the MCU fans posted, her life has been one tragedy after another, so she was desperate to find some semblance of happiness.

Scarlet Witch‘s situation could have been averted if she had the support that she needed. After the death of Vision in Avengers: Infinity War, she has been largely left to her own devices. Nobody from the surviving Avengers has tried to connect with her, knowing that she would be alone. Perhaps if Wanda had a strong community to help her, she may have been able to better handle her grief.
