Mortal Kombat 2’s Karl Urban Casting Is Exactly How To Fix The Reboot’s Johnny Cage Mistake

  • Mortal Kombat 2 will feature Johnny Cage, fixing a mistake made in the 2021 reboot.
  • Karl Urban’s casting as Johnny Cage means that Johnny will be one of the main characters or even the lead protagonist in Mortal Kombat 2.
  • While there may be less focus on Cole Young in the sequel, he could still play a great supporting role alongside Johnny Cage.

Karl Urban has been cast as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, and it fixes a grave mistake made by the 2021 reboot. 2021’s Mortal Kombat was a satisfying release, as it delivered on the vulgar “fatality” end moves and brought a number of the video game characters to life, with Josh Lawson’s performance as Australian mercenary Kano being the major standout. The reboot was not a huge hit, becoming a modest success at the box office with a worldwide $84 million gross, and then broke records on streaming. As a result, Mortal Kombat 2 was quickly greenlit, with one beloved character joining the sequel.

There are many reasons to be excited about Mortal Kombat 2 for both fans and non-fans of the video game series. Mortal Kombat 2 will actually feature a Mortal Kombat tournament, which was absent in the reboot. The Mortal Kombat 2 cast also includes a huge roster of classic video game characters, such as Shao Kahn, Kitana, Queen Sindel, and, of course, Johnny Cage, the smart-mouth movie star who cracks ridiculous one-liners and has extensive martial arts experience. The charismatic movie star will be exciting to see in a genuinely great Mortal Kombat movie universe, and it more importantly fixes a major reboot mistake.

Mortal Kombat 2’s Karl Urban Cast Means Johnny Cage Will Be A Main Character

Johnny Cage won’t only be just another character in Mortal Kombat 2. Based on the casting of Karl Urban, Johnny Cage will be one of the main characters or even the lead protagonist. Urban has had prominent roles in tons of major films, including playing the titular character in the newly popular 2011 Dredd movie, Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok, and Éomer in the Lord of the Rings movies. Urban’s most notable role is his ongoing performance as Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s The Boys, which is absolutely horrific in its violence, not unlike the Mortal Kombat franchise.

With such a huge filmography and taking part in so many franchises, Urban is undoubtedly the biggest actor in The Mortal Kombat 2 cast. Mortal Kombat films will often have a large cast, but Urban’s career means he is the clear frontrunner to lead the sequel. Cole Young (Lewis Tan) was the lead character in Mortal Kombat, and Tan is still a part of the sequel cast, but his role in Mortal Kombat 2 might not be as instrumental as it was in the 2021 reboot. With Urban playing Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, Cole Young and other Earthrealm champions could be relegated to supporting characters in the sequel.

Mortal Kombat 2 Needs A Lot Of Johnny Cage After The 2021 Movie

It’s understandable that Warner Bros. wanted to wait to introduce Johnny Cage, and it absolutely makes sense that the studio didn’t force every popular video game character into the first movie. This is actually something other franchises should take note of. However, given that Cole Young was a brand-new character who did not originate from the video games, the movie may as well have used Johnny Cage. Instead, Johnny Cage was teased at the very end of the 2021 reboot, only revealing the character’s iconic “CAGE” belt buckle.

Cage possibly being the main character in Mortal Kombat 2 is great news for the franchise and can fix the reboot’s mistake. It could also mean that there’ll be less Cole Young, whose role in the first film matched Johnny Cage’s usual role in Mortal Kombat stories. While Cole may not work as a main character again, he’d still be a great supporting character in the sequel. It is also possible that Cole Young dies in Mortal Kombat 2, as the film already has a lot of characters. There could even be a Cole and Johnny Cage Mortal Kombat 2 fight.

However, Cage’s main role still comes with a number of nuisances, as the sequel faces the challenge of avoiding the same story as the 2021 reboot. Just like Cole Young and even Kano, Cage is an outsider who won’t take the idea of Mortal Kombat seriously. As Johnny presumably doesn’t yet know about Mortal Kombat, it’s hard to see Mortal Kombat 2 unfolding any differently. Nevertheless, as Cage is way more exciting of a character and Urban has so much range, the plot retread could still work with Cage’s surely ridiculous commentary of the whole event.
