Cold Pursuit, an action thriller from 2019 starring Liam Neeson, has found new life by becoming a hit on Netflix. A remake of the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, Cold Pursuit follows Neeson as a snowplow driver who seeks revenge against the drug cartel responsible for the death of his son. Other than Neeson, the cast includes an array of recognizable stars like Tom Bateman, Tom Jackson, Emmy Rossum, Domenick Lombardozzi, Julia Jones, John Doman, and Laura Dern.

Now, four years after its release in theaters, the underappreciated action thriller is now a hit on Netflix. For the past week of October 23 to October 29, Cold Pursuit was watched for 13.2 million hours and received 6.7 million total views, marking its first week in the Global Top 10. For the week, the four-year-old action thriller beat out the new Netflix original Reptile, which has dominated the Top 10 in its first five weeks.

How Did Cold Pursuit Perform In Theaters?

Cold Pursuit has been largely overlooked since its release, and it all started with its box office run. The movie was released in theaters in February 2019 and made just $10.8 million in its first weekend, which was one of Neeson’s worst opening weekends of the decade next to 2010’s The Next Three Days, which took in just $6.5 million. However, Cold Pursuit‘s opening weekend had little to do with the quality of the film, as its release was marred by controversial comments made by Neeson regarding a past incident in his life which many interpreted as racist.

Cold Pursuit was able to make back its $60 million budget at the box office by grossing $76 million worldwide, though the controversy involving Neeson likely curtailed its true potential. The controversy aside, Cold Pursuit‘s reviews were generally positive, which is unusual for Liam Neeson’s action movies, though the film contained some dark humor that critics found especially effective. Surprisingly, it was audiences who took issue with Cold Pursuit, indicated by its 49 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which may be been due to review bombing following Neeson’s controversial comments.
