Although the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie was stuck in development hell, the terrifying trailer has finally arrived ahead of the 2023 release date. Based on the video games of the same name, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a supernatural horror movie that turns themed kid’s restaurants like Chuck E. Cheese into pure nightmare fuel. The FNAF movie follows, Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), who faces one of the most challenging nights of his life when he realizes that the animatronic mascots at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza become devious killers after midnight. However, not all is what it seems.

While the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie was initially going to be directed by Gil Kenan and then Christopher Colombus, Emma Tammi eventually took over. Given that the FNAF movie has been in development since 2014, many devoted fans of the Five Nights At Freddy’s games have high expectations — especially when it comes to how Freddy and his gang of murderous mascots appear in live-action. However, given the extensive history and the lore of the games, it’s likely that the writers will add their own artistic liberties to keep things fresh and unpredictable.

The latest Five Nights At Freddy’s news concerns the movie’s rating which gives some insight into what audiences can expect from the horror movie. It has been confirmed that Five Nights at Freddy’s will be rated PG-13 for “strong violent content, bloody images and language.” Given the terrifying nature of the game, the news of a PG-13 adaptation may cause some backlash among fans. However, the description suggests the movie could be pushing the rating limits in terms of the violence.

Of course, a great horror movie can still be achieved with a PG-13 rating and there has been a growing number of examples in the genre. This includes the surprise hit from 2022 M3GAN as well as the upcoming shark attack movie The Meg 2: The Trench. It is not surprising that they are trying for a similar thing with Five Nights at Freddy’s as the premise and comedic tone may attract a young horror audience which could help the movie become a hit.

After its long development, Five Nights At Freddy’s release date is October 27, 2023. While the majority of fans will be able to see the movie in theaters, some viewers in the United States will also be able to watch it from the comfort of their own homes as it will be released on Peacock as well. The October release for the FNAF movie has been a long time coming, since a live-action adaption of Five Nights At Freddy’s has been in discussion for several years.

In April 2015, Warner Bros. Studios announced that a live adaptation of Five Nights At Freddy’s was in development, with Gil Kenan set to direct. However, problems soon arose as production faced many setbacks, which was mainly down to the film industry. With it still being stuck in development hell by 2017, Five Nights At Freddy’s eventually moved to Blumhouse Productions, with producer Jason Blum announcing that it was now set to be directed by Christopher Columbus and written by Scott Cawthon.

Unfortunately, production on the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie faced even more delays after Cawthon announced he was redrafting the script, and then Columbus left the project in 2021. Luckily, the team managed to find another director quickly as Blum announced in October 2022 that Emma Tammi would now helm the project and help Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback co-write the script (via The Hollywood Reporter).

While Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games franchise, Bridge to Terabithia) is playing protagonist Mike Schmidt. Mike’s younger sister, Abby, will be played by Piper Rubio it was also announced in December 2022 that Matthew Lillard had joined the Five Night At Freddy’s cast. Similar to his role as Stu Macher in Scream, Lillard has been cast as Five Night At Freddy’s notorious villain, William Afton, the creator of the animatronic mascots.

Five Nights At Freddy’s Story Details

Similar to the games, the Five Nights At Freddy’s live-action movie sees a security guard take up the night shift at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. However, this turns out to be one of the most difficult nights of their life as the guard discovers that the animatronic mascots that have been left there turn into dangerous serial killers after midnight. They must then spend the rest of the night trying to survive while also learning about the pizzeria’s dark history.

Josh Hutcherson’s Mike Schmidt is a security guard in the live-action adaptation, and much like the games runs into terror on his first night on the job. However, it does appear that the writers may have added their own creative liberties to the supernatural horror. Piper Rubio’s Abby Schmidt, Mike’s younger sister, is a new character for the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie, and the target of Freddy Fazbear and the other murderous mascots. Mike has to prevent them from turning Abby into one of them, and the trailer insinuates that in the FNAF movie plot the animatronic terrors may be possessed by missing children.

As of May 2023, there has been no official confirmation that a sequel is in the works. However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be. Although it depends on how the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie is received, Cawthon had stated that he did have an idea in mind for where the sequel movie could go (via Bloody Disgusting). The chances of a sequel also happening look extremely promising, especially as Matthew Lillard revealed to the podcast WeeklyMTG that he had signed a “three-picture deal with Universal and Blumhouse” in 2023. If this is true, then the official announcement will likely arrive a couple of days after the movie’s release.
