In order to celebrate the birthday of Barbie director Greta Gerwig, Ken actor Ryan Gosling invited a flash mob. Barbie follows the story of Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken as they discover the real world outside Barbieland. The film is nearing the $1 billion mark at the box office and has earned the love of critics and audiences alike with its honest depiction of feminism and the patriarchy.

While Ken struggles with his masculinity in Barbie, Gosling has taken Ken’s song and used it for good. The barbiethemovie official Instagram account revealed that Gosling hired a flash mob to perform “I’m Just Ken” to celebrate Gerwig’s birthday. Check out the video below:

After one Ken starts to perform the song before a laughing Gerwig, an entire flash mob comes in from behind to dance along. As soon as the song changes, Barbies start rolling in to raise the stakes and leave Gerwig wiping tears from her eyes.

“I’m Just Ken” Is A Hit Song

Gerwig has much more than just her birthday to celebrate. Barbie has already proven to be a major sensation. When paired with Oppenheimer, Barbie has set numerous records by dominating the July 2023 box office and securing a $356 million opening weekend worldwide. The film quickly became the biggest opening weekend of the year and the biggest ever for a film directed by a woman. For Gosling, that level of success is more than enough reason to seek out a flash mob.

If Barbie has become an overnight sensation, then Ken isn’t too far behind. Gosling’s Ken shines in Barbie, and his reflections on his life and his purpose pose an existential threat to Barbieland. His expressive song “I’m Just Ken” has proven to be a standout from the Barbie soundtrack because of the underlying emotions behind the song and its ever-present humor. Originally released before the film as part of one of Barbie‘s trailers, “I’m Just Ken” was recently able to debut on the Billboard Top 100 list.

With that in mind, it’s not particularly surprising that Gosling would use “I’m Just Ken” to surprise Gerwig, nor that he would throw in some of the other songs from the Barbie movie. It’s a great way to celebrate Gerwig’s birthday, while also serving as a reminder of the unprecedented success of her most recently released project. If ever anyone had a reason to break down into dance, Barbie has given Gosling and Gerwig exactly that.
