The Nun II producer James Wan has opened up about how returning characters Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) reunite in the sequel film. The end of 2018’s The Nun teased that Frenchie had been possessed by Valak, The Conjuring Universe’s major demon antagonist. The Nun II picks up four years after the first film, where Irene must once again face the demon as it resides in Frenchie.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wan explains how Irene and Frenchie end up reuniting in The Nun II. The Conjuring Universe creator revealed where Irene and Frenchie are by the start of the film, and how the pair end up reunited. Check out Wan’s explanation below:
Frenchie has moved on from the first film and he is at a Catholic school as a groundskeeper-handyman. But we saw that at the end of the first movie that the evil was still with him. It’s slowly percolating, coming back to the forefront. He realizes that there’s only one person that can really help him, and he reaches out to Taissa Farmiga’s character. I love this platonic friendship that the two of them have. She cares very much for him, and she wants to do everything she can to help him. At the same time, she has to confront this evil and fight it again.
Everything To Expect From The Nun II
The Nun II will see Irene and Frenchie once again facing down Valak in the demon’s titular form of The Nun. Joining the cast of The Nun II are newcomers to The Conjuring franchise Storm Reid (Missing) and Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe). With a release date of September 8, it won’t be long before The Nun II arrives in theaters, just before the Halloween season.
Because The Nun II is a movie in The Conjuring Universe, there’s no doubt the film will feature references to past films, including both The Conjuring trilogy and the Annabelle trilogy. The first Nun movie ended with a major tie-in to The Conjuring, revealing Frenchie as the possessed man in a video featured in said film. Because Valak still lurks within Frenchie as of The Nun II, it’s possible this entry in the series won’t feature a happy ending for Irene and its new characters.
The Nun II is the first film in The Conjuring universe since 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which was released both in theaters and on HBO Max. Since The Nun II will be the first exclusively theatrical release in The Conjuring Universe since the COVID-19 pandemic, its box office performance could define the future of the franchise. With Irene, Frenchie, and Valak returning, it seems The Nun II will mark a major homecoming to the big screen for The Conjuring.
