How To Add (And Remove) YouTube Premium Family Members

4

YouTube Premium can be shared across an entire family, with some limitations, and it’s fairly easy to add and remove members from the streaming plan. Whether the cost is split up or one person pays, it’s nice to be able to get more value from a subscription by inviting others to join in and share the benefits. This includes both ad-free YouTube as well as YouTube Music, the latter a service that costs $9.99 a month on its own.

Nearly everyone in a family can find something of interest on YouTube, and that’s why it’s quite helpful that Google allows sharing a YouTube Premium subscription with up to five other family members. To add someone new to a YouTube Premium Family plan, the person that pays for the plan, known as the family manager, must send an invitation. Before this is possible, a YouTube Premium Family Membership is needed. To subscribe, open the YouTube app and tap the profile picture. Select ‘Purchases and Memberships.’ Tap ‘Learn More‘ on the YouTube Premium membership. Select ‘Or save money with a family membership,‘ and then ‘Get Family Plan.’ If a user already has a Google family group, they can share their membership with existing members. If not, complete the purchase first.

Once a YouTube Premium Family membership is activated, the family manager can add new members by opening the YouTube app and signing in with the same Google account used to purchase the membership. Next, tap the profile picture in the top right corner and select ‘Purchases and memberships.’ Tap ‘Edit‘ next to Family sharing settings and select ‘Invite family members.’ Enter the email address or phone number of the person being invited.

To remove a family member from a YouTube Premium family plan, the family manager should tap their profile picture in the YouTube app, then select ‘Purchases and memberships‘ and tap on the membership. Tap the ‘Edit’ button which appears next to family sharing settings. A list of those already added to the plan will appear. Select any person on the list and tap ‘Remove member’ to make room for someone else if needed. The membership can be shared with up to five family members, which YouTube says must all reside in the same household.

Family members who have received a text or email invitation to join the family group will need to follow the instructions to join it. Once they do, the family manager will be notified. Family members can also leave a group at any time. If family manager cancels the YouTube Premium subscription, family members will lose access to all benefits, and will need to subscribe separately.
